Choosing timber flooring for a narrow townhouse
Narrow rooms punish the wrong board width and the wrong direction. Two decisions matter more than colour.

In a narrow floor plan, board direction does more work than colour. Running boards along the length of the room pulls the eye down it and makes the space read longer; running them across does the opposite, and no amount of light timber will undo that.
Board width is the second decision. Wide boards in a narrow room leave you with cut boards at both walls, which reads as a mistake even to people who cannot say why. Measure the room and divide by the board width before you commit.
Colour comes third, and it matters less than people expect. A pale floor does open a room up, but a mid-tone floor with the boards running the right way will beat a pale floor running the wrong way every time.
